DULL KNIFE 1810-1883

Northern Cheyenne chief

He was an ally of Red Cloud against Custer

Chief of the Cheyenne Sioux Tetons Nord.Allié and Arapaho, he has contributed with his warriors to victory on the 7th Indian Cavalry Regiment of the U.S. to Little Big Horn River June 25, 1876.

On November 25 of that year, the village of Dull Knife was burned by Colonel Mackenzie trouprs and the 500 horses of the Indians were slaughtered.

Honest and straightforward despite his achievements, he was able to earn the trust and gratitude of his people.

Dull Knife was born in Montana in 1810. Child he was known to be very resourceful and will leave all sorts of situations. For example, when he was nine years old, a herd of buffalo passed into the camp set up near a river. He took refuge in the shelter of an abandoned beaver which exceeded the water level and there awaited the end of the passage of bison.

It was customary, when traveling from the tribe, the old walk in front to find where to stop. One day, a grizzly bear came out of the bushes to attack them. The young warrior came to the rescue, and fought against the bear with his knife. He fought often armed with a knife and managed to beat once an enemy carrying a shield made of a buffalo buff the blade could not penetrate. The Cheyenne then won the name 'Dull Knife' (literally 'dull knife').

May 10, 1868, he signed the Treaty of Fort Laramie.

By 1875, Americans began to enclose the Indians on reserves, in order to seize their land. The government began peace negotiations, but always with military support. A few resisted, and declared himself at war: Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce, and the Chief Standing Bear of the Poncas, drew their people in the U.S., and managed to obtain portions of land where they moved. Dull Knife was not so lucky. He was considered a dangerous man by the authorities, and was placed with his tribe without its consent on Indian reserves. When he realized that his people were dying miserably, he fled with the consent of his tribe to their northern territories.

Although the journey is long and perilous, he managed to avoid military troops in pursuit, and reach their native soil. But because of the famine, some Indian betrayed Dull Knife and his tribe fought the soldiers. They were taken to Fort Robinson, the men locked in cells, women and children herded into the fort. These were women who revolted first, and pushed the Warriors to try to escape. They brought their few weapons, and participated in the attempted escape. All members were willing to give their lives rather than suffer the slow death of this confinement.

The attempt failed, for lack of weapons, and all were massacred by soldiers in place.

DULL KNIFE 1810-1883
