Umatilla nation

Indian Nation of northwestern Oregon   

Fishermen, gatherers and hunters of small game, Umatillas, close to the Nez Perce, Cayuse and Yakima, belonging to the culture of the Rocky Mountain Plateau.
In 1855, the Umatillas participate in the war of Yakima that under the leadership of Chief Kamiakin, try to resist white expansion. They sign with the governor Isaac Stevens Treaty of Walla Walla by which they agree to abandon their territory and to retire to a reservation north-eastern Oregon
In 1878, part of Umatillas joins the fight of Bannocks, Cayuse and Paiute against the army and settlers. But Umatillas that reside on the reserve deny aid to Chief Egan and his men. Through cunning they seize and kill Egan.
The Umatillas currently share their reservation with the Cayuse and the Walla Wallas-.

Pêcheurs, cueilleurs et chasseurs de petits gibier, les Umatillas, proches des Nez-Percés, des Cayuses et des Yakimas, appartenant à la culture du Plateau des Montagnes Rocheuses.
En 1855, les Umatillas participent à la guerre des Yakimas qui sous la conduite du chef Kamiakin, tentent de résister à l’expansion blanche. Ils signent avec le gouverneur Isaac Stevens le traité de Walla-Walla par lequel ils acceptent d’abandonner leur territoire et de se retirer dans une réserve du nord-est de l’Oregon
En 1878, une partie des Umatillas  se joint à la lutte des Bannocks, des Cayuses et des Paiutes contre l’armée et les colons. Mais les Umatillas  qui résident sur la réserve refusent leur aide au chef Egan et à ses hommes. Par la ruse ils s’emparent d’Egan et le tuent.
Les Umatillas partagent actuellement leur réserve avec les Cayuses et les Walla-Wallas.
