THE BLACKFEET NATION,LA NATION BLACKFEET

THE BLACKFEET NATION

he Blackfoot Confederacy is made up of four tribes: the Blackfeet (or Peigan), the Blackfeet / Peigan North, the Blood (or Kainai) and Blackfoot (or Siksika). They are currently installed in Montana in the United States and Alberta in Canada. When the Canadian government signed a treaty with Niitsittapi (real people) they initially contacted the Siksika who lived on the border with the tribe Niitsittapiskaku. They assumed wrongly that all Niitsittapis were Blackfoot. The Niitsittapi are actually Peigan, Montana Blackfoot, Blood and Blackfoot (Siskika).

Daily life in camp

Like the other Great Plains tribes, the Blackfoot were nomads who followed the movements of bison herds. Their territory ranged from Edmonton to Calgary, Alberta to Yellowstone River, the Rocky Mountains on the border of North Dakota today. The most important events of the year was the Sun Dance (Sun Dance) and the ceremony of the Medicine Lodge. These celebrations brought together several tribes. One of the regions sacred Blackfoot called Badger-Two Medicine Area. She was lost in 1895 following the signing of a treaty with the U.S. government, which had treated the Indians was mistranslated to make them sign.

Language

The language is the Niitsittapi Niitsipussin (the real language). There are some differences in how to construct sentences in different groups.

History

The Blackfoot migrated from the Great Lakes region east of the USA to their present territory. They were nomadic buffalo hunters. They saw for the first time the horses in 1730 during an attack by the Shoshone. They managed eventually to have their own horses through trade with the tribes Flathead, Kutenai, and Nez Perce. The Blackfoot also made trade with the whites, they exchanged buffalo hides against horses and weapons. But things were changing as the buffalo became scarce, they had been exterminated in many areas. Deprived of their main food source, the Indians were starving. Their livelihoods depend from the time of Indian Agencies.

The word suggests a lack of tribal cohesion, political, cultural and social applies absolutely to Niitsitapi. In fact, the unitary structure of the dominance allowed Niitsitapi cultural, political and military, making them the Lords of the Plains. It was a nation, a people united by a common language, common culture and religion, living in a territory whose borders were respected by the neighboring nations. The government came in connection with Crowfoot, Siksika a political leader, to negotiate business for India. Crowfoot Niitsitapi consulted the other leaders because he could not possibly decide alone and must have the consent of other leaders. In 1870, Maria on the river there was one of the worst massacres of Indians by the U.S. military troops. On the morning of January 23, a quiet village Peigan nation was attacked by the army. Many Indians were killed, mostly women, children and the elderly. The commander who received carte blanche to attack the Indians, all Indians, he then took to Peigan to punish attacks against white settlers that they were not responsible. After the massacre, the troops eventually not find the camp they sought, but the camp was empty, hostile Indians had fled.
